Apprentice Lineman – Ameren Illinois

Job Description

Ameren Illinois is seeking an Apprentice Lineman to join its electric transmission and distribution team serving over 1.2 million customers across central and southern Illinois. This is a structured, hands-on apprenticeship designed to develop the skills required to become a Journeyman Lineman. Apprentices work as part of a line construction and maintenance crew, progressing from foundational tasks to advanced energized line work over a multi-year training period.

The program follows a step-based progression model, beginning with work on unenergized systems and advancing to higher-voltage energized circuits. Apprentices receive direct supervision from experienced linemen and gradually take on more responsibility as skills and safety proficiency are demonstrated.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical systems
  • Assemble line materials, hardware, and pole-mounted equipment
  • Climb poles and work at heights to support installation and service operations
  • Perform groundwork including material handling, site prep, and tool setup
  • Work on unenergized and later energized conductors up to and beyond 480 volts
  • Follow all safety procedures and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Respond to emergency call-outs, including storm restoration work
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe working condition

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly Pay: $42.32/hour (top step)

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to pass the EEI C.A.S.T. aptitude test
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and consistent attendance
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments and at heights

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow
  • Exposure to heights, electrical hazards, and heavy equipment
  • Emergency and storm response work required, including nights and weekends
  • Physically demanding tasks including climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces
