Program Information
Apprenticeship Exploration School (AES) is a public charter high school offering students the necessary credits to achieve a high school diploma while providing them with a gateway into the New England Laborers’ Apprenticeship Program. AES specializes in supporting students to successfully complete a comprehensive education for their future, including all graduation requirements.
Programs Offered
- Construction Craft Laborer CTE Program (Pre-Apprenticeship): Students learn in a simulated construction atmosphere using industry-standard tools and machinery under the guidance of accredited instructors. They explore scopes of work such as road construction, heavy & highway, bridge work, tunneling, utility work, commercial structures, welding, and more.
- Event Planning & Tourism CTE Program: Students learn about the dynamic hospitality and tourism industry through classroom instruction, work-based learning opportunities, and informative field trips. The curriculum includes topics like global and local tourism, hotel operations, cruises, hospitality service, wedding planning, food and beverage operations, and meetings and conventions.
Program Length
Programs are integrated into the high school curriculum, typically spanning grades 9 through 12. Students engage in both academic coursework and technical training throughout their high school education.
Certifications & Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Construction Craft Laborer program are eligible to complete 4 weeks of training at the New England Laborers Training Academy in Pomfret, CT, after which they receive their union card with the Laborers International of North America and begin working with competitive wages and benefits. The Event Planning & Tourism program prepares students for careers in one of Rhode Island’s fastest-growing industries, with opportunities in hotels, food and beverage, cruises, weddings, event planning, management, and operations.
Program Requirements
Admission to AES is open to Rhode Island students from grades 9 to 12. Students are admitted by lottery, as per Rhode Island law and regulations from the Rhode Island Department of Education. The lottery determines which applicants are enrolled for the following school year.
Application Process
Prospective students can apply online via EnrollRI. The application process includes submitting necessary documentation such as a copy of the birth certificate, proof of address, authorization to release school records, prior school records, and special education records if applicable. Sibling preference and children of AES employees are given priority in the admissions lottery.
Financial Aid & Support Services
As a public charter school, AES does not charge tuition. The school provides a supportive environment with small class sizes, career guidance, employment preparation, and opportunities for dual enrollment with the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI).
