Electrical Apprentice – IEC Northern Ohio (Independence, OH)
Program Information
The Independent Electrical Contractors Association of Northern Ohio (IEC-NO) offers one of the region’s most respected electrical apprenticeship programs, designed to prepare individuals for long-term careers as certified electricians. Located in Independence, Ohio, the IEC-NO program partners with more than 32 licensed electrical contractors who employ apprentices while they complete their training. This arrangement allows students to earn income from day one while receiving hands-on experience in real working environments, including residential, commercial, and industrial job sites.
The apprenticeship program combines structured classroom instruction with extensive on-the-job training. Apprentices learn electrical theory, wiring methods, conduit bending, blueprint reading, safety protocols, grounding techniques, installation of circuits, motors, panels, and more. The curriculum is updated regularly to reflect industry changes, including new technologies, electrical codes, and modern installation practices. Throughout the program, apprentices work directly alongside experienced journeyman electricians who provide mentorship, guidance, and daily skill development.
IEC-NO places an emphasis on professionalism, safety, and technical accuracy. Apprentices receive training on job-site communication, material handling, equipment operation, and troubleshooting electrical systems. Many job assignments involve working from ladders, operating power tools, navigating construction sites, and handling tasks that require precision and physical readiness. As students progress through the four-year program, they become increasingly responsible for completing tasks independently and contributing to project success.
Graduates of the IEC-NO Registered Apprenticeship Program earn certification as Journeymen Electricians in the state of Ohio. This credential opens the door to stable, well-paid careers with electrical contractors, industrial facilities, government agencies, utility companies, and specialty electrical service providers. Many electricians continue on to supervisory roles, project management, estimating, or owning their own contracting businesses.

The apprenticeship is a four-year program that includes classroom training and 8,000 hours of supervised on-the-job experience. Successful completion results in journeyman certification.
