Program Information
GEMCO Constructors is seeking an Apprentice – Controls to join its national team supporting HVAC controls and building automation systems projects across the United States. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, GEMCO is a national mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building automation systems, and service contractor delivering comprehensive design-build solutions in more than 30 states.
This entry-level apprenticeship is designed for individuals interested in building a long-term career in HVAC controls and building automation. Apprentices work under the direction of a Foreman and experienced technicians while developing technical skills, safety awareness, and industry knowledge required for long-term success in controls and automation systems.
Training Structure
Apprentices receive hands-on field training assisting with the installation, testing, and maintenance of HVAC controls and building automation systems on new construction and retrofit projects. Training includes conduit bending, wiring installation and termination, mounting control panels, and assisting with system startup and testing.
Apprentices learn applicable codes, standards, and best practices while progressing in technical competency. Ongoing mentorship supports skill development, documentation practices, and quality workmanship aligned with project schedules and objectives.
Work Environment
This is a 100% travel, field-based position with work performed at project sites nationwide. The typical rotation consists of 17 days in the field followed by 4 days at home. Travel assignments include lodging accommodations, typically in solo hotel rooms with kitchenette access.
Work is performed on active construction sites and requires adherence to safety policies, procedures, and quality standards. Apprentices must maintain a clean, organized work area and demonstrate professionalism in interactions with team members and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Assist Foremen and senior technicians with planning, coordination, and execution of controls system installations. Mount control panels and enclosures, bend and install conduit and raceways, and pull, label, and terminate wiring using approved methods.
Install control devices including relays, sensors, current switches, actuators, and related components. Assist with testing and startup of installed systems to verify proper operation and performance. Document work performed and report progress, issues, or concerns as directed.
