Program Information
The Greater Boston Joint Apprenticeship Training Center (JATC) is the primary electrical apprenticeship training facility for the Greater Boston area, operating in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and signatory electrical contractors. The JATC exists to train highly skilled, safety-conscious electricians through a structured, earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship model recognized throughout Massachusetts.
The electrical apprenticeship program combines full-time, paid on-the-job training with rigorous classroom instruction delivered at the Dorchester training center. Apprentices work under the supervision of licensed journeyman electricians across a wide range of job sites, including commercial buildings, hospitals, universities, transit infrastructure, data centers, and industrial facilities throughout the Boston metro region.
Classroom instruction covers electrical theory, blueprint reading, conduit bending, motor controls, lighting systems, transformers, fire alarm systems, and the National Electrical Code (NEC). Strong emphasis is placed on jobsite safety, code compliance, and proper work practices that meet both state licensing requirements and union standards.
In addition to apprenticeship training, the Greater Boston JATC serves as a continuing education hub for journey-level electricians. The center offers advanced skill upgrade courses, code update classes, and OSHA safety training to ensure the local electrical workforce stays current with evolving technologies and regulatory requirements.
Graduates of the program complete their apprenticeship with thousands of documented on-the-job hours and extensive classroom instruction, positioning them to become Massachusetts-licensed journeyman electricians with long-term career stability, strong earning potential, and access to union benefits.
