Program Information

The Heat & Frost Insulators Local 64 Apprenticeship in Oklahoma City provides a comprehensive training pathway for individuals seeking careers in mechanical insulation, energy efficiency, and environmental safety. This program offers an in-depth blend of classroom education and hands-on jobsite experience, preparing apprentices to work on a wide range of insulation systems used in commercial, industrial, and mechanical environments. Apprentices learn to install and maintain insulation on piping, ductwork, boilers, HVAC equipment, storage tanks, and other temperature-sensitive mechanical systems found in hospitals, manufacturing plants, schools, refineries, and power facilities.

The curriculum covers all essential elements of mechanical insulation, including thermal, acoustic, cryogenic, and specialty insulation applications. Apprentices receive instruction in blueprint reading, fabrication techniques, system layout, material selection, and proper installation procedures for fiberglass, foam, rubber, mineral wool, and advanced insulation products. Safety training is a major component of the program. Students learn OSHA safety standards, hazard recognition, scaffolding safety, respiratory protection, fall prevention, confined-space procedures, and environmental safety practices.

A significant part of the apprenticeship focuses on firestopping and fireproofing systems, which are critical components of modern construction. Apprentices also receive training in asbestos and lead abatement procedures, preparing them for work in remediation and environmental safety roles. Throughout the apprenticeship, participants work alongside experienced journeymen insulators on active job sites, gaining real-world skills in system troubleshooting, precision installation, maintenance, and teamwork. By the time apprentices complete the program, they are equipped with extensive knowledge of how insulation improves energy efficiency, reduces system wear, and supports environmental sustainability across large-scale mechanical systems.

Program Length

A 4-year program that includes 6,400 hours of paid on-the-job training and 640 hours of related classroom instruction.
