Program Information
Houston Electrical JATC provides industry-leading apprenticeship programs jointly sponsored by Labor and Management. This partnership ensures that apprentices receive the most up-to-date training available for careers as electricians and telecommunications technicians. Apprentices “earn while they learn,” gaining paid on-the-job experience while receiving classroom instruction from expert instructors.
Programs Offered
- Inside Wireman Apprenticeship: Training to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in commercial, industrial, and residential settings.
- Telecommunications Technician Apprenticeship: Specialized training in telecommunications systems and infrastructure.
Program Length
The apprenticeship typically lasts 5 years and includes:
- On-the-job training with progressive wage increases
- Classroom instruction covering electrical theory, codes, and safety
- Eligibility for up to 50 semester hours of college credit through the American Council on Education
Certifications & Career Opportunities
Graduates achieve journeyman status, opening doors to supervisory positions such as foreman and other leadership roles. Career opportunities span construction projects, telecommunications, and industrial sectors. In addition, journeyman electricians trained by the JATC can earn salaries averaging $76,000 per year, with strong demand across Texas and nationwide.
Program Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Possess a valid driver’s license (State IDs not accepted)
- Pay a $25 application fee (money order only)

Application Process
Applications are accepted every Wednesday (excluding holidays) at the JATC campus:
108 Covern Street, Houston, TX 77061
- Morning session: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
- Afternoon session: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Applicants must apply in person with required documentation. Wages increase with academic progress and work experience until journeyman status is reached.
