Jake Marshall LLC is seeking a motivated and dependable Sheet Metal Apprentice to join its growing team in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This full-time apprenticeship opportunity is ideal for individuals who want to build a long-term career in the HVAC and mechanical construction industry while gaining hands-on experience with mission-critical building systems. As a Sheet Metal Apprentice, you will assist in the fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of sheet metal components used in HVAC systems and other mechanical applications. You will work primarily in the field on active construction sites, supporting experienced technicians while learning essential skills related to ductwork installation, metal fabrication, welding, rigging, and equipment operation. This role provides exposure to both shop-based fabrication and on-site installation, allowing apprentices to develop a well-rounded skill set.
The position emphasizes safety, teamwork, and quality workmanship. Apprentices participate in daily job-site planning, safety huddles, and hazard assessments to ensure work is performed efficiently and safely. You will be trained to read and interpret blueprints and specifications, measure and mark materials accurately, and use a variety of hand tools and powered equipment. Over time, apprentices are expected to grow in technical ability, job-site awareness, and professional responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Shear, bend, form, and weld thin sheet metal during fabrication processes
- Operate press brakes, plasma cutting machines, welding equipment, and hand tools
- Load, unload, and stage materials for installation across job sites
- Install metal ductwork using steel supports, frameworks, and fasteners
- Measure, mark, drill, and assemble metal components accurately
- Fabricate or modify sheet metal parts on-site as project needs arise
- Review blueprints and specifications to determine work sequence and procedures
- Participate in daily safety meetings, hazard analyses, and job planning
- Inspect equipment and materials to identify safety concerns or quality issues
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This role is primarily field-based and involves working on active construction sites. Apprentices must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions, around heavy equipment, elevated work areas, and loud environments. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and stairs, bending, kneeling, crawling, and prolonged standing or walking throughout the workday.
Qualifications
- 0–4 years of mechanical or construction-related experience
- General understanding of HVAC systems preferred
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to work nights, overtime, and travel between job sites as needed
- Strong teamwork skills and willingness to learn
Compensation & Growth
Base hourly pay ranges from $22 to $25 per hour, depending on experience. This apprenticeship offers long-term growth opportunities within the company and exposure to advanced mechanical systems in commercial and industrial environments.
