Lake County Electricians Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) Apprenticeship Program – Merrillville, IN
Program Information
The Lake County Electricians JATC offers a comprehensive five-year apprenticeship program designed to train individuals for careers as journeyman wiremen in the electrical construction industry. The program combines on-the-job training (OJT) with classroom instruction, covering various aspects of electrical work to ensure apprentices acquire the necessary skills and knowledge.
Program Length
The apprenticeship spans five years, during which apprentices must complete 10,000 hours of OJT and attend classroom sessions one day every other week for eight hours. Apprentices do not receive payment for time spent in class.

Certifications & Career Opportunities
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates achieve journeyman status with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), qualifying them for employment with contractor partners affiliated with the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). This certification opens opportunities for various roles within the electrical construction industry.
Program Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school graduate or possess a GED.
- Provide an official transcript showing a grade of ‘C’ or better in two semesters of high school (or higher) level Algebra. Alternatively, completion of the SkillsPrep Tech Math course is acceptable.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
Application Process
All applications are submitted online. Applicants must create an account on the application website, pay a $40.00 fee, and complete the application within 28 days. Qualified applicants will be scheduled for an aptitude test covering Algebra and Reading Comprehension. A score of 6 or better is required to qualify for an interview. Successful candidates are placed on a ranked list for selection into the apprenticeship program.
Financial Aid & Support Services
Once accepted, the cost to the apprentice is approximately $300 annually for books. Apprentices earn a wage during OJT, starting at 30% of a journeyman’s wage ($14.01 per hour as of June 1, 2023), with raises at predetermined intervals throughout the five years. Benefits include health insurance, pensions, and an annuity.
