Program Information
The New Mexico Bricklayer and Block Mason Apprenticeship Program is a registered, earn-while-you-learn training pathway designed for individuals pursuing skilled careers in masonry construction. This apprenticeship prepares participants to become highly qualified bricklayers and block masons capable of constructing, repairing, and restoring structural and architectural masonry systems across residential, commercial, industrial, and public infrastructure projects throughout New Mexico.
Apprentices receive comprehensive training in laying and binding building materials such as brick, concrete block, cinder block, structural tile, glass block, and terra-cotta block using mortar and related compounds. Instruction covers the construction of walls, partitions, columns, arches, sewers, foundations, and load-bearing structures. Apprentices learn to read blueprints, follow layout lines, maintain precise alignment, and meet strict structural and aesthetic standards required in modern construction.
The program emphasizes durability, craftsmanship, and safety. Apprentices are trained to mix and apply mortar correctly, cut and shape masonry units, install reinforcement materials, and repair damaged or aging masonry systems. Because masonry work often occurs outdoors, apprentices develop the ability to work in varying weather conditions while maintaining productivity and jobsite safety. Training also includes proper scaffold use, ladder safety, and material handling techniques essential for long-term success in the trade.
