Program Information
The New Mexico Roofer Apprenticeship Program is a state-registered apprenticeship designed to prepare individuals for long-term careers in the roofing and waterproofing industry. Sponsored by the New Mexico Roofing Contractors Association (NMRCA), this program combines structured on-the-job training with related classroom instruction to develop highly skilled roofing professionals capable of working across residential, commercial, and industrial projects throughout New Mexico.
Apprentices in this program learn the full scope of modern roofing and waterproofing systems. Training includes installing and repairing roofs using materials such as shingles, slate, asphalt, metal, wood, and composite systems. Apprentices also gain experience in advanced applications including waterproofing, insulation, sealing, and soundproofing of roofs, walls, and structural components. Work environments vary and may include new construction, reroofing, and repair projects, giving apprentices exposure to diverse job sites and real-world conditions.
The program emphasizes safety, craftsmanship, and problem-solving. Apprentices are trained to inspect damaged or aging roofs, determine proper repair methods, estimate materials and labor, remove debris or standing water, and safely install flashing, underlayment, and weatherproof barriers. Physical readiness is an important component of the trade, as roofing work often involves climbing, lifting, balancing, and working at heights in changing weather conditions.
As a registered apprenticeship recognized by the State of New Mexico, this program follows national apprenticeship standards and aligns with Occupational Information Network (O*Net) classifications. Graduates complete the program as journey-level roofers, fully qualified to perform skilled roofing work and positioned for steady employment in an industry with consistent demand across the state.
