Raleigh-Durham Electrical JATC – IBEW Local 553 (Research Triangle, NC)

Program Information

The Raleigh-Durham Electrical JATC Apprenticeship Program is a state-registered four-year curriculum that combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training. Apprentices study electrical theory, the National Electrical Code, and OSHA safety regulations, while gaining real-world experience across the Research Triangle and within IBEW Local 553’s jurisdiction.

Programs Offered

  • Inside Wireman Apprenticeship: Four-year program preparing apprentices for journeyman-level electrician work, blending academic learning with hands-on jobsite training.

Program Length

The program spans 4 years and includes:

  • 900 hours of classroom instruction
  • 8,000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT)
  • Written and hands-on examinations

  • Journey-Level Worker certification
  • North Carolina Department of Community Colleges completion certificate
  • National JATC completion certificate

Graduates are fully qualified for careers as electricians, with opportunities in construction, maintenance, distributed energy, and advanced electrical systems.

Program Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate strong dedication and be prepared for both rigorous coursework and demanding fieldwork. They should meet basic educational requirements and possess the ability to work safely in diverse jobsite environments.

Application Process

Interested candidates apply through the Raleigh-Durham Electrical JATC. Admission is competitive and based on applicant qualifications. Training is conducted at the state-of-the-art Raleigh-Durham Electrical Training Center in Research Triangle Park, NC.
