Program Overview

Northwest College provides high-quality technical training designed to prepare students for in-demand trades in welding, automotive service, and HVAC. The Welding Technology pathway teaches students modern weld processes such as MIG and TIG, robotics applications, and cutting and fabrication techniques. The Automotive Technology track covers diagnostics, electrical systems, hybrid and electric vehicles, and prepares students to work in a changing automotive environment. The HVAC Technology option trains students to install, maintain, and service energy-efficient heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems for both homes and businesses.

Located in the Big Horn Basin region, Northwest College emphasizes partnerships with local employers, providing apprenticeship and internship opportunities that help students transition directly to the workforce.

Hands-On Training

Students gain lab-based experience in modern workshops and service bays where they apply their classroom learning in real scenarios. For example:

• Welding Labs: Practice MIG, TIG, and robotics welding on structural and pipe work.
• Automotive Bays: Repair, test, and service vehicles using latest diagnostic tools including hybrid/electric systems.
• HVAC Simulations: Install and service commercial and residential units, using real equipment and industry standards.

Certification & Licensing Prep

• Welding program aligns with welding industry codes and builds readiness for weld-qualification tests.
• Automotive training prepares students for certifications such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and hybrid vehicle service credentials.
• HVAC pathway covers refrigerant handling and service procedures aligned with EPA, industry standards and prepares students for service-technician roles.

Career Paths & Salary Outlook

• Welder / Pipe Welder: Fabricate and assemble structures or pipe systems in construction or industrial facilities.
• Automotive Service Technician: Diagnose and repair modern vehicles, including hybrids and EVs, in dealerships or independent shops.
• HVAC Service Technician: Install and maintain climate-control systems for residential or commercial clients, focusing on energy efficiency and smart systems.

Program Length

• Certificate Programs: Approximately 9–12 months of full-time study.
• Associate Degree Programs: Approximately 2 years of full-time study.
