Program Information
The Pre-Apprentice Lineman–Splicer position with Evergy serves as the formal entry point into one of the most essential and technically demanding trades within the electric utility industry. This structured pre-apprenticeship is designed to prepare motivated individuals for advancement into Evergy’s full Lineman-Splicer Apprenticeship Program. Participants receive hands-on field experience while working directly alongside experienced linemen, gaining a foundation in the tools, equipment, safety procedures, and physical skills required to perform high-voltage line work.
Pre-apprentices learn the fundamentals of ground operations, system construction, and overhead and underground electric distribution work. Instruction includes proper use and care of ropes, rigging, line tools, and climbing or bucket-based equipment. Participants assist with pole setting, anchor installation, material handling, and basic framing operations for conductors, transformers, switches, cutouts, lightning arrestors, capacitors, and streetlight assemblies. This position emphasizes safety, physical conditioning, situational awareness, and teamwork—key attributes necessary for a future in line work.
Throughout the program, individuals receive job-shadowing opportunities, participate in safety meetings, and complete training modules at Evergy’s Cedar Point Safety & Training facility. The pre-apprenticeship creates a strong pathway into the next phase of training, where participants progress to hot-qualified work and are eventually prepared for journeyman-level responsibilities. Evergy’s training standards follow industry best practices and adhere to federal, state, and DOT safety regulations.

Program Length
This is a pre-apprenticeship role functioning as a full-time position, preparing participants for entry into Evergy’s Lineman-Splicer Apprenticeship. Work is performed Monday through Friday, typically from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Program Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to successfully complete a Physical Agility Test
- Mechanically inclined with strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as soon as possible
- DOT certification required for driving
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks
- Capability to meet essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
