Program Information
The South Carolina Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Apprenticeship Program provides comprehensive training for individuals pursuing a career in bricklaying, stone masonry, tile setting, and other allied masonry crafts. This registered apprenticeship combines structured classroom instruction with extensive paid, on-the-job training to develop the technical abilities, craftsmanship, and safety skills required for success in the masonry trades. Apprentices learn to work with brick, block, stone, tile, and a wide range of masonry materials while gaining a deep understanding of construction processes used across residential, commercial, and industrial building projects.
The program covers essential masonry techniques including laying brick and block, mixing and applying mortar, cutting and shaping masonry units, installing stone veneers, constructing arches and structural walls, and performing restoration work on historic structures. Apprentices also learn to read blueprints, interpret construction drawings, understand building codes, and follow job-site specifications. Instruction emphasizes proper tool use—such as trowels, levels, jointers, saws, and scaffolding equipment—along with best practices for material handling and job-site safety.
Beyond foundational skills, apprentices gain experience working on active construction sites alongside skilled journeymen. This hands-on training exposes them to real-world challenges such as project layout, structural alignment, weatherproofing, reinforcement placement, and troubleshooting issues that arise during complex masonry projects. Safety is a core component of the curriculum, including fall protection, scaffold setup, PPE use, and hazard awareness—ensuring apprentices are prepared to work safely in a physically demanding trade.
Graduates of the program emerge fully prepared to begin careers as bricklayers, stone masons, tile setters, or restoration specialists. Many go on to work for masonry contractors, commercial construction firms, and specialty restoration companies, with opportunities for advancement into foreman, superintendent, or contractor roles.
