Vermont Construction Academy – Commercial Carpentry Registered Apprenticeship

Program Information

The Commercial Carpentry Registered Apprenticeship at the Vermont Construction Academy is a hands-on program designed to build advanced carpentry skills while emphasizing workplace safety and professional development. The program provides both paid training and classroom instruction to prepare students for careers in commercial construction.

Program Length

The program is completed in 40 weeks (Fridays only) and includes:

  • Total Hours: 316 hours of paid, hands-on advanced training
  • Structure: 2 hours of classroom instruction + 6 hours of hands-on training per session

What You’ll Learn

  • Foundational Skills: Construction math, drawing interpretation, tool safety and operation, building materials, and fastener selection (create your own fastener board).
  • Jobsite Safety & Practices: Forklift, trench, and electrical safety; fall protection; temporary construction setup; elevation work; safety inspections and walkthroughs.
  • Concrete & Structural Work: Concrete pouring and testing, floor and wall framing (wood & metal), openings, sheathing, roof framing, and stair construction.
  • Windows, Doors & Hardware: Window and trim installation, door framing and installation, commercial hardware, and specialty product installs.
  • Interior Finish Carpentry: Trim, baseboards, tongue & groove paneling, cabinet installation, and sheetrock handling and installation.
  • Career & Life Skills: Personal finance, professional development, goal setting, and career pathways with guest professionals.

Certifications & Career Opportunities

Graduates are equipped with technical skills and hands-on experience for careers in commercial carpentry and related trades. Training includes OSHA-focused safety practices, structural work, and finishing skills that prepare participants for immediate employment and long-term career growth.

Program Requirements

Applicants should meet Vermont Construction Academy’s enrollment requirements and be prepared for physical, hands-on training. A strong work ethic, safety awareness, and interest in construction trades are essential.
