The Delaware Roofing Apprenticeship Program provides a comprehensive training pathway for individuals seeking long-term careers in the roofing and waterproofing trades. Classroom instruction covers essential topics such as roofing materials science, construction fundamentals, blueprint interpretation, OSHA safety regulations, fall protection, weatherproofing principles, and proper tool usage. Apprentices learn how different roofing systems function, including shingle, tile, slate, flat membrane, torch-down, synthetic, and metal roofing systems. They also receive instruction on underlayments, ventilation systems, flashing installation, ice and water barriers, insulation, moisture control, and roof slope calculations. This foundational knowledge prepares apprentices to understand building envelope performance and how roofing ties into overall structural design.

On the jobsite, apprentices are trained in practical roofing techniques including measuring and cutting materials, laying shingles, installing drip edges and flashing, sealing joints, repairing leaks, removing old roofing materials, and installing new roof decking. They become familiar with specialized tools such as pneumatic nailers, roofing hammers, cutters, heat welders, safety harness systems, and tear-off equipment. Apprentices also learn how to identify roof damage, perform inspections, assess structural integrity, and coordinate workflow with other trades working on-site. Due to the nature of roofing work, weather awareness and adaptability are major components of training; apprentices are taught how heat, cold, wind, and moisture affect roofing material performance and jobsite safety.

The program emphasizes physical conditioning, teamwork, jobsite communication, and professional conduct. Because roofing is performed at heights, safety training is integrated at every level of instruction. Apprentices learn proper scaffold use, ladder safety, harness systems, debris handling, and hazard recognition to maintain a safe working environment.
