Program Information
The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) offers a structured Mechanic / Technician Apprenticeship based out of the Timpanogos/Orem facility. This is a paid, competency-based apprenticeship designed to develop skilled transit maintenance technicians through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on training, and progressive wage advancement.
Apprentices participate in required technical instruction, complete written testing, and work under supervision alongside advanced-skill technicians. The program prepares apprentices to maintain, diagnose, and repair complex transit vehicles and systems used in daily public transportation operations.

Key Responsibilities
Assist senior technicians with advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and component rebuilds using hand and power tools. Perform preventative maintenance inspections, complete assigned repairs, and support daily fleet readiness. Apprentices progress through increasingly complex tasks as competencies are achieved and verified.
Program Length & Advancement
This is a four-year apprenticeship with a defined wage progression. Apprentices receive a pay increase every six months, beginning six months after program start. Upon successful completion, apprentices advance to the Journeyist classification.
- Starting Pay: $27.13 – $31.13 per hour
- Shift Differential: Additional $1.00 – $1.50 per hour (when applicable)
- Graduation Wage (Journeyist): Approximately $36.10 per hour
Schedule
Typical shift is 2:00 pm – 10:30 pm with Sunday/Monday off. Shifts may change based on operational needs.
Program Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Ability to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement within 60 days of eligibility
- Pass aptitude and standardized testing (administered and paid by UTA)
- Required tools
Applicants must meet one of the following:
- 2-year degree in a related technical field
- Related military MOS
- One year of technical school plus one year of related experience
- Six months of qualifying UTA experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience (as determined by UTA)
