OR & SW Washington Roofers and Waterproofers Apprenticeship Program – Portland, OR

Program Information

The OR & SW Washington Roofers and Waterproofers Apprenticeship Program provides certified union training for individuals seeking long-term careers in the roofing and waterproofing trades across Portland, Oregon and Southwest Washington. As regional growth continues, demand for skilled roofers and waterproofers remains strong, making this apprenticeship a direct pathway into a stable, high-paying construction career.

This program prepares apprentices to work on a wide variety of roofing systems, including commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. Apprentices may work on newly constructed buildings or participate in full tear-off and replacement projects on existing structures. Because roofing systems vary widely, apprentices gain exposure to multiple materials, installation methods, and safety procedures throughout their training.

Entry-level apprentices begin by learning foundational jobsite skills such as material identification, moving and staging materials, removing old roofing systems, maintaining a clean worksite, and setting up fall protection and safety systems. As apprentices progress, they transition into more hands-on installation work and gradually take on increased responsibility, including mentoring newer apprentices and assisting with crew leadership.

The majority of training takes place on active job sites with union signatory contractors, ensuring real-world experience. Classroom instruction complements field training by covering roofing theory, system design, safety standards, and best practices. This balanced approach ensures graduates are well-rounded, highly employable journeyman roofers and waterproofers.
