J. F. Ahern Co. is a long-established, family-owned mechanical and fire protection contractor with a history dating back more than a century. Apprentices are employed under a collective bargaining agreement and work side-by-side with journeyman sprinkler fitters on active commercial and industrial construction projects.
Sprinkler Fitter Apprenticeship Scope
Apprentices receive hands-on training installing automatic fire sprinkler systems designed to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure. Work includes measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing pipe and system components according to engineered drawings, codes, and fire protection standards.
Training emphasizes correct installation practices, system layout, material handling, and coordination with other construction trades. Apprentices learn how sprinkler systems integrate with building structures and life-safety requirements in a wide range of environments.

Wages increase as apprentices advance through the program. Upon successful completion, journeyman sprinkler fitters earn more than double the apprentice hourly rate, reflecting the high skill level and responsibility of the trade.
