Colorado Mesa University’s Technical Programs (CMU Tech) in Grand Junction provide hands-on career and technical education through a selection of associate degree and certificate pathways designed to meet workforce needs in the Grand Junction and Western Colorado region. CMU Tech’s programs combine classroom instruction with applied learning experiences that emphasize industry-relevant skills for entry-level technical positions and potential apprenticeship opportunities.

Welding Technology at CMU Tech prepares students for work in automotive, construction, manufacturing, and fabrication environments. Coursework includes multiple welding processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), automated layout and fabrication techniques, cutting operations, blueprint reading, technical mathematics, and safety practices. Training incorporates laboratory work alongside classroom lecture to develop both practical skill and technical knowledge for industry employment.

The Construction Electrical program trains students in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems, covering wiring methods, electrical codes, installations, safety procedures, tools and materials, print reading, and basic electrical calculations. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for roles such as apprentice electrician, electrical installer, and other entry-level electrical positions, with smaller class sizes and hands-on training that mirror workplace conditions.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) training at CMU Tech offers both short-term certificates and an associate degree option. The HVAC Fundamentals Technical Certificate concentrates on residential HVAC basics and prepares students for entry-level positions or apprenticeship pathways. A Plumbing Service I Technical Certificate is offered to build complementary skills and can stack into HVAC degree options. Classroom and lab work provide practical experience with climate control systems, refrigeration basics, airflow, and controls.

CMU Tech also offers other industry-aligned technical programs including Electric Lineworker training, Construction Technology, Manufacturing Technology, and related technical certificates that reflect the broad range of technical careers in the region.
