Program Information
The New York Power Authority offers a highly specialized Apprentice Operator program based at the Niagara Power Project in Lewiston, New York. This position places apprentices inside NYPA’s largest hydroelectric generating facility, where they participate in a comprehensive, fully paid apprenticeship focused on power plant operations.
The program is designed to train future operators responsible for the safe, reliable operation of large-scale hydroelectric generation systems. Apprentices work rotating 12-hour shifts and receive structured, hands-on instruction across electrical, mechanical, and operational disciplines.
Hydroelectric Operations Training
Apprentices train under the direct supervision of senior operators and progress through a formal apprenticeship curriculum governed by an Apprenticeship Agreement. Training covers all core systems required to operate and maintain a major hydroelectric facility, including generation equipment, auxiliary systems, and operational procedures.
As apprentices complete and sign off required training milestones, they are authorized to perform approved tasks independently under general supervision.
Hands-On Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities include assisting higher-grade operators, performing operational and maintenance-related tasks associated with hydroelectric generation, and supporting plant operations across multiple areas of the facility.
Apprentices are also responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization of workshops, tools, and equipment within assigned work areas while adhering to all safety and operational standards.
Work Environment & Schedule
This position is based entirely on-site at the Niagara Power Project and requires working rotating 12-hour shifts. Apprentices must be able to work throughout the hydroelectric facility, including industrial and mechanical environments.
Compensation & Union Benefits
This is a union-represented position with hourly rates collectively bargained between the New York Power Authority and the IBEW. The starting negotiated wage for this apprenticeship is approximately $35.30 per hour, with additional wage progression as outlined in the apprenticeship agreement.
NYPA provides a comprehensive benefits package and fully funds all required apprenticeship training.
