Program Information

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is one of Iowa’s largest and most respected institutions for hands-on career and technical training, serving students across multiple campuses in Central Iowa. The college is well known for its strong partnerships with regional employers, modern training facilities, and high job placement rates in skilled trades. DMACC’s technical programs are designed to equip students with the practical, industry-aligned skills needed for immediate employment in fields such as Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Electrical Systems, HVAC/R, and Plumbing. Each program integrates classroom instruction with extensive lab work, giving students the opportunity to practice real-world tasks using industry-standard tools and equipment.

The Automotive Technology program offers students comprehensive training in diagnostics, engine repair, electrical systems, brake systems, transmissions, suspension, and computerized vehicle controls. Students train in full automotive bays using modern diagnostic scanners and repair tools, preparing them for roles in dealerships, repair shops, and fleet maintenance operations. Many students also pursue ASE certification preparation as part of their training.

The Construction Technology program focuses heavily on residential and light commercial building methods. Students learn framing, roofing, interior finishing, blueprint reading, safety protocols, and the use of modern construction tools. DMACC regularly collaborates with local contractors, allowing students to participate in real building projects that strengthen job-ready skills.

The Electrical program trains students to understand residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems. Coursework includes wiring, conduit bending, motor controls, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), blueprint reading, and electrical code requirements. Students develop strong troubleshooting skills, preparing them for apprenticeships or entry-level electrical technician roles.

The HVAC/R program provides specialized training in heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems. Students work with furnaces, heat pumps, refrigeration systems, and digital control systems, learning to diagnose, repair, and install equipment across a variety of environments. Training aligns with industry standards and prepares students for EPA 608 certification opportunities.

The Plumbing program teaches students the fundamentals of water supply systems, drainage systems, gas piping, fixture installation, and plumbing codes. Through lab-based instruction, students practice assembling piping systems, troubleshooting common issues, and using the tools and equipment found in residential and commercial plumbing settings. Many graduates transition into registered apprenticeships across the state.

Hands-On Training

Students gain practical experience in DMACC’s fully equipped trade labs, including:

• Automotive diagnostics, repair, powertrain systems, and computerized vehicle technology

• Electrical wiring, conduit installation, motor controls, PLC systems, and troubleshooting
• HVAC installation, refrigerant handling, system testing, and energy-efficiency optimization
• Plumbing system layout, fixture installation, drainage systems, and gas line practices
